The Promise is an international charitable organization Dr. Shah established along with other doctors specializing in reconstructive surgery to help treat patients suffering from cleft lips, palate deformities, and burn injuries.
Aside from the pain of these physical deformities, cleft lifts and palate abnormalities also cause a variety of complications for patients, such as deformity of the nose and disfiguration of the lips, which cause dental, speech, and breathing problems. These physical abnormalities also lower the self-esteem of patients.
On the other hand, Dr. Darshan Shah explains that patients suffering from burn injuries do not only suffer from scars that are unsightly. Burns run deep and cause intense physical pain.
Treating cleft lips, palate deformities, and burns require a series of surgical procedures that underprivileged patients living in impoverished nations can barely afford. Even just one operation will do a lot of wonders in the recovery of these patients.
